About the Project
The Hispanic Women's Resource Center of Catholic Community Services was established in
1985 geared to Hispanic Displaced Homemakers. The multi-service model stresses:
- Bilingual/bi-cultural counseling and job development
- Legal immigration assistance
- Prevention and education on substance abuse
Available services include housing advocacy and counseling for elderly Hispanic as well as
other elderly female groups.
The Center serves the Hispanic inmates at Clara Mahan State Prison for women. In 1995 it
established a Literacy Center with:
- Certificate curricula in computer literacy
- ESL
- Nutrition and home finance programs run by Rutger's University Extension Education
- Native literacy and English literacy day and evening classes
The HWRC is a Hudson County lead service provider for Hispanic FDP / Work-First New Jersey
welfare recipients and immigrants.
- A full time attorney, Wednesday evening hours for legal assistance
- County wide participation in service providers council
- Off site vocational training in trades and occupation at CCS Boland Center Newark,
are initiatives designed to strengthen the position of displaced home makers.
Center hours are Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
